Wisdom Teeth Removal in Kamloops, BC

Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, develop during the late teen or early adult years. The average mouth holds 28 adult teeth, and an additional four trying to squeeze in can cause issues.

Why Removal Is Often Recommended

In some cases, wisdom teeth come in properly and don’t need to be removed.

However, this is rare.

More often, wisdom teeth become impacted—meaning they are stuck beneath the gums or grow in at an angle. When this happens, they can lead to a range of issues.

Problems Caused by Wisdom Teeth

Untreated wisdom teeth may lead to:

  • Infection and swelling
  • Pain or stiffness in the jaw
  • Difficulty cleaning the area
  • Tooth decay or gum disease
  • Cysts or (rarely) tumours
  • Shifting or crowding of other teeth
  • Damage to nearby teeth or nerves

Regular dental checkups help monitor their development and determine the right timing for removal.

Why Early Removal Matters

Removing wisdom teeth before your mid-twenties can:

  • Reduce the risk of complications
  • Allow for easier healing
  • Prevent future damage to surrounding teeth and bone

Your surgeon will review your specific case and discuss any risks during your consultation.

What to Expect During Treatment

Your care begins with a consultation, where we review your case and may take 3D scans of your mouth.

If IV sedation is used, you’ll sleep comfortably through the procedure and wake up once it’s complete.

During surgery:

  • Erupted teeth are gently removed
  • Impacted teeth are accessed with small incisions and carefully extracted

Afterward, you’ll rest in our recovery area until you’re ready to go home.

Recovery

Most patients return to normal routines within a few days

Swelling and discomfort are managed with medication and ice

You’ll receive clear post-operative instructions to support healing

A responsible adult must accompany you, drive you home, and stay with you for 24 hours after sedation.

Types of Anaesthesia

We offer anaesthesia options to keep you as comfortable as possible during your surgical procedure.

Local Anaesthesia

Lidocaine is injected through a needle and temporarily numbs a small area, preventing nerves from communicating pain sensations to the brain. Patients remain awake and do not feel pain during treatment.

IV Sedation

IV procedural sedation puts the patient into a sleep-like state. Our team of doctors, Registered Nurses and surgical assistants closely monitors all vital signs throughout treatment, and the patient will remain comfortable until the procedure is over. Patients must have an adult remain at the clinic during the procedure and take them home after the surgery.
